• When does the semester start at IISc?

  The Semester starts from the 1st working day of August for Regular (August) admissions.

  The Semester starts from the 1st working day of January for Mid-Year admissions.

• What are the programs available at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore? How can I get into IISc?

  Please see here for details of the various degree programmes offered at IISc. A flowchart of the basic qualifications such as previous academic qualifications, national entrance exams, etc., required for the degree programmes at IISc is also provided.

• Is there an NRI/ Management quota at IISc?

  No, there is no NRI/ Management quota for admissions at IISc. The candidate has to apply through the regular admission portal.

• How does one fill the online application form for admissions?

• I have some doubts regarding admissions, whom should I contact?

• What is the fee structure for various UG/PG/Ph.D. programs at IISc?

• What are the important dates for admissions?

• I wish to apply for 3 departments/ disciplines. Should I apply through a single application, or should I fill in three separate application forms?

  One application form is sufficient to apply to 3 departments/ disciplines in the Research/ Course programmes. You may also apply for different degree programs such as research (PhD, MTech (Research)) and course (MTech, MSc, etc.) using a single application.

• Can I submit multiple applications for the same programme at IISc?

  Applicants can submit only one application per programme. Please note that Multiple submission of applications for the same programme is not permitted and if found, the application will not be considered for the admission process. There is no restriction in applying for more than one programme using separate applications or the same application (For eg., you can submit one application for M Tech, one application for M Mgt, and one for Research programme, or use a single application for all three).

• What is the tie-breaking criteria followed for admissions at IISc, and how are ties resolved in case of equal ranks/marks/scores during the admission selection process?

  The following tie-breaking criteria (in the given descending order) are followed during the admission selection process at IISc:

  • In the admission selection procedure, which includes written test and interview, then the candidate having a higher score from the sum of written test and interview shall be ranked higher for admission.
  • In case the minimum eligibility criteria for the admission to the program includes any of the national level tests like UGC/NET/GATE etc. then the candidate having higher score/better rank in these tests shall be ranked higher in the merit list for admission. The comparison of scores within the same national level qualifying examinations will be considered for the purpose.
  • The total percentage of marks obtained in Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc, B.Tech, B.E, etc.) shall be considered for merit.
  • The total percentage of marks obtained in Intermediate/class 12/Diploma shall be considered for merit.
  • The total percentage of marks obtained in SSC/Class 10 shall be considered for merit.
  • Based on Date of Birth, the candidate senior/older in age will be ranked higher.
• Whether a reserved category candidate selected on his/her own merit adjusted against reserved seats or unreserved seats?

  A candidate from the reserved category, selected on his/her own merit, without availing of any of the concessions or relaxations to which such candidates are entitled to, is recommended against unreserved seats. If any concession or relaxed standards of selection has been applied at any stage of selection process, such candidates will be considered against vacancy reserved for the concerned category only.

• What is the selection procedure for admission to the M.Tech./M.Des./M Mgt/ M. Engg/ MSc?

• Is there any interview or aptitude test in the selection procedure for M.Tech./M.Des./M Mgt/ M. Engg/ MSc?

• I am a CFTI graduate applying for M Tech/ M Des programme. Should I register at COAP?

  Case I: Candidates graduating from CFTI with a valid GATE score and intending to apply for M.Tech. Admission in participating institutes should register at COAP with their valid GATE score(s).

  Case II: Candidates graduating from CFTI with BE/B.Tech. or equivalent degree and a CGPA ≥ 8.0 (on a scale of 10) can apply directly to M.Tech. Admission in participating departments without registering at COAP. Click here for more information regarding M. Tech through CFTI (without GATE).

• I am an AMIE degree holder; am I eligible for M.Tech./Research programs?

  B.E./B.Tech. equivalent examinations of Professional Societies, recognized by MoE/UPSC/AICTE (e.g., AMIE by Institutions of Engineers), are eligible. Candidates enrolled up to 31.05.2013 with professional societies (e.g., AMIE) recognized by MoE are eligible to apply.

• I have a Diploma, and I am an AMIE degree holder; am I eligible to apply to M.Tech./ Research programs?

  B.E./B.Tech. equivalent examinations of Professional Societies, recognized by MoE/UPSC/AICTE (e.g AMIE by Institutions of Engineers). Note: Candidates enrolled upto 31.05.2013 with professional societies (e.g AMIE) recognized by MoE are only eligible to apply.

• What are the criteria for applying to M.Tech./M.Des./M Mgt/ M. Engg/ MSc?

• I have submitted my application but need to update my national entrance test score/ rank (e.g., GATE, JEST etc.) that was published recently. How can I do so?

  You can update your national entrance test details after submitting your application until the last date specified. Login to the admissions dashboard from the IISc Admissions portal. From the menu on the left side, click on the link ‘Update Your National Entrance Test Result(s)’. Select the application number for which you would like to update the results. Enter the score/marks and click on Save/Update button.

• I am a working professional wishing to apply for a part-time MTech course-based programme. What are my options?

  Please see the MTech(Online) industry-sponsored degree programme for details. If you are eligible, you may apply through the admissions portal.

• I have a degree from a CFTI. Can I apply for Ph.D. without GATE?

  Yes, graduates of CFTI institutions with a minimum CGPA of 8.0/10.0 and a course duration of at least 4 years can apply for Ph.D. without a national entrance test.

• I have a degree from an institution listed as a CFTI in other websites. But it is not listed under the list of CFTIs on the Admissions Website or on the Admissions Portal. Can I apply to the Ph.D. programme under the CFTI mode of entry?

  IISc periodically updates the list of CFTIs relevant to our degree programmes. Only these institutions are considered for the CFTI mode of entry for the Research programme at IISc.

• I have a B.E./B.Tech. degree. Can I apply for the Ph.D. programme?

  Yes, graduates with a B.E./B.Tech. degree along with GATE/ NET JRF are eligible to apply directly for the Ph.D. programme or to the M Tech (Res) programme. Those students completing the PhD degree will also be awarded an M.Tech(Res)/ MS(Res) degree (as applicable) subject to fulfilling the credit requirements.

• I have a B.E./B.Tech. degree from CFTI with CGPA 8.0/10. Can I apply for the M Tech (Res) programme?

  Yes, graduates with a B.E./B.Tech. degree from CFTI with CGPA 8.0/10 is eligible to apply for M Tech (Res) programme.

  NOTE: Graduates of any course with a minimum duration of FOUR years, from any Centrally Funded Technical Institution (including IIIT in PPP mode) with a minimum CGPA of 8 out of 10 or its equivalent may be considered for admission to M.Tech (Res.) by respective Department under project mode i.e. the stipend/fellowship for such admitted students will be from the project being executed by the Department concerned.

• I am a BE/ B Tech candidate (non- CFTI) with no valid Gate score. Am I eligible for M.Tech. (Res) program?

  All BE/ B Tech/ B Sc (Engg.) (non- CFTI) candidates need to have a valid GATE score to apply for M Tech (Res) programme.

• Can I apply specifically to M.Tech. (Res) or to Ph.D. in the online Application form?

  For the research programmes, when filling the online application form, you may apply for the PhD programme and in addition specify if you wish to be considered for the MTech (Research) programme. In addition, you can give your option of joining only to M.Tech. (Res) or to Ph.D. programme at the time of interview to the department interview committee.

• I have a 3-year B Sc degree. Am I eligible to apply for the M.Tech. (Res) program?

  No, you are not eligible. You need to have a M Sc degree with a valid GATE score to apply for the M.Tech. (Res) program.

• When will the Mid-year admissions start/ forms be available for the Ph D program?

  Mid-year admissions for specific Ph.D. programmes will be announced and applications solicited in October, for the semester starting on 1st January of the next year. Interviews will be conducted in November. Please visit this Admissions website by October for more details. Mid-year admissions are not available for MTech (Research) or other degree programmes.

• I am a working professional wishing to apply for a part-time PhD or MTech (Research) research-based programme. What are my options?

  Please see the External Registration Programme (ERP) industry-sponsored research degree programmes for details. If you are eligible, you may apply through the admissions portal.

During Admission

• Where will be written exam (Venue)?

  Classroom 134, classroom 137, ESE Auditorium & MMCR.

• How many intakes is available for ESE/EPD/MVLSI admission?

  Check in the official IISc admission website.

• Is there any waiting list process?

  Yes.

• What documents should I bring during admission?

  Interview Call letter, Degree certificates, Marks cards, ID proof, Category certificate, Transfer / migration certificate, GATE scorecard.

• Are original documents required?

  Yes.

• Can someone else report on my behalf?

  No.

• Will MTech students receive stipend?

  Yes.

• Will M.Tech CFTI students receive stipend?

  No.

• When is stipend credited?

  Every end of the month.

• Where can i have snacks?

  ESE department has specified Coffee club where you can have snacks.

• Where to submit TA form?

  In the department office room no. 104, if already submitted in another department, then no need to submit in this department.

• How much time it will take for MTech /Research interviews?

  Usually 20- 30 mins, depends on Candidate.

• I didn't bring Interview call letter; will I be allowed to give interview?

  You can send a mail to office.ese@iisc.ac.in and get a hardcopy printed then you can attend the interview.

• Can i attend online interview?

  No, but only in un-avoidable circumstances faced by student and informed to department then that candidate can be scheduled for online interview.

• Can i get priority to be interviewed first in the queue?

  No, but depends on candidates' urgency requests and interview panel approval is needed which would be monitored by volunteers assigned to each interview panels.

Post Admission

• What are the class timings for the courses offered this term?

  The timetable will be displayed on the department notice board before the start of the term. It will include the schedule, class timings, and venue details for all courses.

• Where should we submit the medical fitness certificate?

  After you get your medical fitness certificate from the Health Centre, it should be submitted in the Department Office.

• When will the results get declared after admissions?

  For MTech results, the results can be viewed in the Coap Portal. For PhD results, the provisional list will be uploaded by the department in the department website.

• How should I get registered for a course?

  Course registration should be done on SAP. Refer to the page 41 of the SIH, under section 6.1 – Course Registration (link: Student Information Handbook).

• Where can I receive my student ID card and institutional email ID?

  A Temporary ID will be issued by the academic section with 3 months validity at the time of Document Verification as a part of the admission process. To request a permanent ID card, the student should submit a copy of the temporary ID card along with their recent passport size photograph to the Academic Section. Institutional email ID will be communicated to you by the digits office.

• How do I borrow the library books?

  Find out the book you require to borrow from the ESE Library . Once book is selected, inform the department office for borrowing. Office will get your name registered as check out and issue you the book for 14 days.

• How do I obtain a NOCs/Provisional/bonafide certificate, etc.?

  Students need to contact the academic section regarding issuance of these certificates. Students were advised to raise a request for the certificate in the ADSER Portal. Details regarding the various certificates issued by Academic Section can be found on page 113 of the SIH, under section 19.2 – Certificates Issued by the Academic Section (link: Student Information Handbook).

• Do I need to apply for a leave of absence during the term break?

  Students are required to apply for leave of absence during term break. Since term break leave is outside the 30 days leave that a student is entitled to in a year, student may apply to the department, and Department Chair can approve it. The purpose of leave of absence during term break is to ensure that the whereabout of the student is known to the Department.

• How can I get a transcript or grade card?

  The transcripts will be printed by the Academic Section and forwarded to the Department Office. The Department Office will then contact the students to distribute the transcripts.
